Goldstone contains no gold, and is not a stone, but is beautiful enough to often be classified as a gemstone. This manmade gem consists of tiny copper flecks suspended within glass. It is most commonly reddish brown, but is also available in either blue or green. Discovered by accident in 17th century Venice, goldstone was originally named "aventurina" or possibly "a Ventura" (meaning by chance or to cometh). The mineral aventurine was named for its resemblance to goldstone or "aventurine glass". The term "aventurine glass" should be discouraged so as to avoid confusion with the naturally occurring stone aventurine. Some practitioners of alternative medicine believe the copper inclusions can improve circulation and decrease arthritis pain.
