Iolite is named for the greek word "ios" which means violet. This stone is a very pretty violet blue when viewed from one angle, but will appear transparent from another and yellowish-grey from yet another. This gem acts as a natural polarizing filter. This stone was used by the vikings and other sea travelers to locate the suns exact position in the sky on even the most overcast of days.
