Most smokey quartz is heat treated crystal quartz, as naturally occurring smokey quartz is rather difficult to find. Smokey quartz is sometimes misleadingly referred to as "Smoky Topaz". This misleading name was once quite common, but it is no longer acceptable in the gemstone market. Many dealers will inadvertently market this stone as smoky topaz, with no malice intended.
