Obsidian is a natural volcanic glass formed when viscous lava is rapidly cooled, most commonly by water. Obsidian is less fragile than standard window glass, and was often fashioned into sharp cutting edges by stone age man. Snowflake Obsidian is highly valued for jewelry creation due to its strikingly bold white inclusions giving the stone the appearance of snowflakes against a black sky.
