Ancient Greeks believed that rock crystal quartz was fossilized ice, and many scientists continued to believe this until the 16th century. Most quartz on todays market is lab grown, not to be confused with synthetic.

Description:	This warm smokey brown variety of quartz is a fantastic compliment to fall fashions. Most smokey quartz is heat treated crystal quartz, as naturally occurring smokey quartz is rather difficult to find. Smokey quartz is sometimes misleadingly referred to as "Smoky Topaz". This misleading name was once quite common, but it is no longer acceptable in the gemstone market. Many dealers will inadvertently market this stone as smoky topaz, with no malice intended.
