Early lampwork beads were created with the flame of an oil lamp, hence then name, but today are formed with torches.

The brilliant optical qualities of the dichroic lampwork beads came to us thanks to space age technology. NASA originally developed the unique process of stacking multiple layers of metal oxides and then fusing them with glass for satellite mirrors. The radiant spectrum of colors seen in these beads is a result of different wavelengths of light either passing through or reflecting off of various layers of metal oxides. Each bead is truly an individual work of art; continuously drawing the eye to resplendent colors as light shifts upon the bead. Description: These beautiful Czech antique style Cathedral beads from Jablonex appear to have built in textured bead caps! Crafted from superior quality Czech glass, these beads are molded into their desired shape and then coated in a color, usually silver or gold, but sometimes other shades. The bead is then faceted and fire polished around the center, leaving the ends coated in color to create a beautiful glass treasure! Some cathedral beads are not dipped in color, but still display the attractive texturing on the ends. Cathedral beads are perfect for adding a tasteful vintage feel to your jewelry designs. Cathedral beads also are quite popular in rosary designs.
