Cabochons

Cabochons are usually a highly polished, convex shaped, un-faceted gem with a flat back for mounting. On occasion, some cabochons may have flat faces or may have their top surface faceted. Cabochons can be utilized in a number of different ways. You can secure them with a seed bead stitched bezel, wrap them with wire, set them into PMC designs, or glue them onto flat surfaces such as bolo slides. Cabochons can be made from gemstones, glass, or even shell. Please note: Cabochons are not beads, and do not have holes!

Abalone is one of the ocean's most radiant gems. Each of our abalone cabochons is totally unique; colors and patterns vary from piece to piece, and animal to animal. Abalone shell is dark and dull on the outer layer, but the inside nacre holds a miraculous display of color. The hypnotically undulating colors radiate an iridescence comparable to opal. The dark swirl patterns are the result of layers of protein, while the colored swirls are the result of light refracted through layers of calcium.
