Officially recognized as a gemstone in 1981, the organic gemstone Ammolite is the fossilized remains of a long extinct sea creature called an Ammonite. AA grade Ammolite displays a myriad of bright opalescent colors, sells for around $50 per carat, and is far rarer than diamond. Our fossilized Ammonites are not the coveted AA grade, but still display a moderate amount of dark color play and luster. These pendants offer a fascinating and unique look into the long distant past. Ammonites were a cephalopod, and the ancestor of the squid, cuttlefish, and nautilus, that became extinct during the cretaceous period over 70,000,000 years ago. Currently the International Commission of Colored Gemstones (CIBJO) recognizes only five organic (once living material) gemstones: Ammolite, amber, pearl, jet, and coral.
