Detailed Description: Opal is similar in composition to quartz, but has a water content up to 20%, usually falling within the 6 to 10% range. This water content means opal is vulnerable to drying out, thus killing the stone by cracking or loss of luster. You should wear your opal often to protect it from drying out, they should also be protected from chemicals and sunlight for the same reason. There are three naturally occurring varieties of opal: Precious opal- displays a rainbow of opalescent color play. Fire opal- can be orange, red, or yellow, transparent or opaque. Common opal- is generally opaque, in a variety of hues and fashions including pink, white, blue and dendritic/dendrite opal.
