Antique SVC Venetian Hex Bugle 1mm — Transparent Luster Clear #2

Genuine Venetian hex bugles from old Società Veneziana Conterie warehouse stock, in Clear #2 with a transparent luster finish. At 1mm these are the shortest bugle SVC made — barely longer than they are wide, closer in scale to a seed bead than to the long fringe bugles most people picture. The glass is colorless, and the luster coating gives it a soft pearl sheen with a faint warm ivory cast, so a dish of them reads as candlelight rather than ice.

The hex cut is what earns these their keep. Instead of a smooth round tube, each bead carries flat lengthwise facets, and on clear glass with a luster coating those facets behave like tiny mirrors — catching light at different angles as a piece moves and throwing back far more sparkle than a round bugle of the same color could. Massed together the effect is closer to cut crystal than to glass beadwork.

Clear is the most versatile thing in a bead drawer and the most underrated. It picks up whatever sits behind it, so the same beads read warm over gold thread and cool over silver; it lightens a dense color block without introducing a competing hue; and in fringe it disappears into movement, leaving only the flash. For restoration work, a lustered clear is distinct from a plain transparent crystal of the same size — the sheen is visible side by side, and a plain crystal will read flatter next to original material.

Sizing note: The original acquisition card designates this lot as a 1mm hex bugle. Antique beads are measured from original stock and sizing is approximate; length in particular varies more in bugles than in seed beads, since they were cut from drawn cane. We recommend pre-sorting before count-critical work.
