Transparent Red Orange #4 Square Hole — Antique SVC Venetian Seed Beads, 10/0

The square hole is the reason to buy these, and it changes how they sit on the thread. A square perforation gives the bead flat internal walls, so it seats squarely against its neighbours instead of rolling to find an angle. In loom and peyote work that reads as straighter columns and a tidier edge, and strung work stacks rather than tumbles. Because the glass is transparent you also see the perforation from outside: each bead carries a small bright square at its core rather than a round one.

Transparent glass means the colour you end up with depends on how densely you set it. On their own these are a warm, clear red orange with light passing straight through. Massed into a filled area the colour compounds where beads overlap and reads deeper and more brick-toned, with the brightest orange holding at the edges and around the perforations. If you are matching from a photograph of a finished piece, settle whether you are matching the loose-bead hue or the compounded one before you order.

Lot character. Depth of colour varies across uncirculated stock of this age, and in a transparent bead that variation is visible rather than hidden — some beads carry a heavier wall and read darker in the same handful. Dark specks in the perforations are normal for this stock, kiln and annealing debris from period production rather than anything introduced since, and clear glass shows them readily. Warehouse stock also carries the occasional off-colour bead, so order enough to sort from if you need a clean single-colour field.

Sizing and threading. SVC 10/0 runs 2.40–2.70mm with a hole in the 0.70–0.80mm range, roughly 13–15 beads to a strung inch. A size 10–12 needle with 0.10–0.18mm thread suits it — KO, One-G or Nymo B/D. Those hole figures describe the nominal opening; antique holes are undocumented and vary lot to lot, and a square perforation measures differently across the flat than across the diagonal, so test-thread a sample before anything count-critical. Adjacent SVC sizes overlap widely, which is why a caliper beats the card notation.

For restoration work the square hole is often the tell that sends a buyer looking for period stock in the first place — a modern round-hole substitute will not sit the same way in a rebuilt loom panel, whatever the hue agreement. We do not expect to source this colorway again. Browse our full SVC oranges inventory to compare against your reference material.

Uncirculated old stock, never strung for trade. Small lot, finite old stock.

Description

Antique Murano transparent red orange seed beads, 10/0, in a 10 gram tube. Square perforations seat flat and stack without rolling, which makes them a loom and peyote bead as much as a colour match. Transparent glass compounds in mass, so a filled area reads deeper and more brick-toned than the loose beads do.
