Transparent Red #4 — Antique SVC Venetian Seed Beads, 10/0

A deep transparent never looks in the piece the way it looks in the hand. Held to the light a single bead is a clear, warm ruby red; poured into a filled area the same beads read much darker, closer to a brown-edged brick. That is the colour compounding as light crosses several walls of glass instead of one, and it catches people out more often than any hue disagreement does. Decide which of the two states your reference material is showing you before you commit.

Why transparency is match-critical here. Intensity depends on wall thickness and on how tightly you set the beads, so the same tube can serve as a mid red in an open airy stitch and as a near-black red in a dense one. Light keeps flashing colour at the edges and through the perforations even where the mass has gone dark, which is the look a restoration buyer is usually chasing — an opaque red of the same hue goes flat instead and will read as wrong in the finished piece.

Lot character. Colour depth varies bead to bead across stock of this age; some run lighter and more orange-leaning, others darker and cooler, and both belong to the lot. Dark specks in the perforations are normal here, kiln and annealing debris from period production, and transparent glass hides nothing. Uncirculated warehouse stock of this age also carries the occasional off-colour bead, so order enough to sort from and plan a pre-sort for count-critical or uniform-face work.

Sizing and threading. SVC 10/0 measures 2.40–2.70mm across with holes in the 0.70–0.80mm range, giving roughly 13–15 beads to a strung inch. Use a size 10–12 needle with 0.10–0.18mm thread — KO, One-G or Nymo B/D all sit comfortably. Antique holes are undocumented and vary lot to lot, and SVC sizes overlap more than modern ones do, so caliper measurement beats the card notation and a test-thread beats both. Strung counts for antique lots are estimates.

This is the workhorse red for period beadwork repair, where a transparent has to be replaced with a transparent and the era of the glass carries as much weight as the hue. We do not expect to source this colorway again. Browse our full SVC reds inventory to compare against your reference material.

Uncirculated old stock, never strung for trade. Small lot, finite old stock.

Description

Antique Murano transparent red seed beads, 10/0, in a 10 gram tube. A single bead is a clear warm ruby, but the colour compounds in mass and a dense filled area reads much darker with light still flashing at the edges and perforations. Depth varies bead to bead, and period specks in the perforations are normal for this stock.
