Opaline is the operative word here, and it is not a synonym for either of the whites people usually mean. These are neither an opaque white nor a greasy white. Opaline glass is translucent: it passes light without ever letting you see through it, and it carries a pearlescent, nacre-like sheen at the surface. Against a flat chalk white it looks softer and slightly warmer, with a faint shell-like cast sitting on top of the colour rather than underneath it.
Opaline against greasy, since the two get confused constantly. Greasy glass diffuses light inside the bead — a waxy internal glow with nothing sitting on the surface. Opaline puts its character at the surface instead, and reads warmer and more nacreous for it. The two are close enough in a photograph to fool anyone and far enough apart in a finished piece to be obvious, so if your reference material specified one, the other is the wrong material regardless of how well the hue agrees.
Lot character. Sheen strength varies bead to bead — some read almost milk-glass plain, others clearly pearly — and both extremes are authentically opaline. Dark specks in the perforations are normal for this stock, kiln and annealing debris from period production rather than anything introduced since, and because the glass is translucent rather than opaque they show more readily than they otherwise would. Uncirculated warehouse stock of this age also carries the occasional off-colour bead, so order enough to sort from if you need a clean single-colour field.
Sizing and threading. SVC 10/0 runs 2.40–2.70mm with a hole in the 0.70–0.80mm range, roughly 13–15 beads to a strung inch, and strung counts for antique lots are estimates. A size 10–12 needle with 0.10–0.18mm thread suits it: KO, One-G or Nymo B/D. Antique holes are undocumented and vary lot to lot, and adjacent SVC sizes overlap widely — 10/0 and 11/0 share more of a window than modern sizing suggests — so caliper the beads and test-thread a sample.
For restoration this is the white that sits correctly in period beadwork where a modern opaque reads too bright and too flat, and it is a natural ground for pearl and ivory palettes. Browse our full SVC whites and neutrals inventory to compare against your reference material.
Uncirculated old stock, never strung for trade. Small lot, finite old stock.
