Antique SVC Venetian Transparent Luster 11/0 Seed Beads — Gray #1, Square Hole

Genuine Venetian 11/0 seed beads from old Società Veneziana Conterie warehouse stock, in Gray #1 with a transparent luster finish and a square hole. The glass is a cool smoke gray carrying a distinct blue undertone — closer to storm cloud or old window glass than to a neutral pewter — and the luster coating sits over it as a soft pearlized sheen. Because the body is transparent, light travels through the bead and picks up the luster on the way out, giving these a silvery, slightly liquid quality that a solid gray bead cannot produce.

The square hole is worth planning around. Where a round-hole bead rolls freely on the thread, a square hole seats each bead against its neighbors with a slight structural bias, so massed work lies flatter and stacks more evenly — valued in loom work and tight peyote, and a large part of why square-hole SVC lots get sought out by name. It also means light comes off a finished piece in facet-like flashes rather than an even gleam.

Scattered through this lot you will find beads with fine dark specks and inclusions suspended in the glass. These are original to the batch — artifacts of century-old furnace work, not surface dirt — and against a cool transparent gray they read as depth and character rather than flaw. A neutral like this is the workhorse of the SVC palette: it cools warm colors, separates clashing brights, and carries shading transitions that a solid opaque gray would flatten.
