Antique SVC Venetian Opaline Luster 13/0 Seed Beads — White #2

Genuine Venetian 13/0 seed beads from old Società Veneziana Conterie warehouse stock, in White #2 with an opaline luster finish. Opaline is not the same thing as opaque white: the glass is translucent milk glass, so light enters the bead and diffuses inside it rather than stopping at the surface. Over that sits a pearlized luster coating. The combination is what gives these their particular soft inner glow — lit from within rather than reflecting off the top, closer to a real pearl than to painted white glass.

Worth knowing before you match: this is a warm white, not a stark one. The cast is distinctly creamy, closer to ivory or old piano keys than to paper, and it reads warmer still where the luster catches. Beside a cool bright white it will look noticeably yellow. That warmth is an asset in antique and restoration work, where cool modern whites tend to look wrong next to century-old material, but it means a swatch check is worth doing if you are blending with newer beads.

Cream opaline is one of the most useful things to keep on hand. It functions as a highlight without the harshness of true white, softens transitions between saturated colors, and reads as pearl in floral and bridal-style work at a fraction of what pearls cost. At 13/0 it is fine enough for detailed pictorial beadwork and edge-beading while still threading comfortably.

Sizing note: This lot measured approximately 1.7–1.8mm at sampling, consistent with SVC 13/0 tolerances, and the original acquisition card designates it 13/0. Antique beads are measured from original stock and sizing is approximate; dimensions may vary between lots. We recommend pre-sorting before count-critical work.
