If you are matching a red off a photograph of a finished piece, start here: transparent glass does not hold a single colour value. The body is clear-bodied scarlet with a distinct orange lean, and the intensity you get depends entirely on how much glass the light has to cross. A single strung row over pale ground reads bright and almost fiery; the same beads packed into a filled area read considerably deeper and cooler. Neither one is the true colour — both are, which is exactly the problem when you are working from a swatch.

Why transparency is match-critical. Light passes fully through the wall, so colour compounds wherever beads overlap and the perforations and edges flash brighter than the body. The ground participates too: over white backing these lift toward tomato, over dark backing they settle into cherry. Substituting an opaque or a greasy red will read as incorrect in the finished piece no matter how well the hue agrees on a chart, because the surrounding material stops contributing to the colour.

Lot character. Dark specks in the perforations are normal for this stock — kiln and annealing debris from period production rather than anything introduced since — and clear glass shows them far more plainly than an opaque body would. Wall thickness varies bead to bead, which is part of why the colour reads as a range rather than a flat wash. Uncirculated warehouse stock of this age also carries the occasional off-colour bead, so order enough to sort from if you need a clean single-colour field.

Sizing and threading. SVC 10/0 measures 2.40–2.70mm across with a perforation in the 0.70–0.80mm range, working out to roughly 13–15 beads to a strung inch. A size 10–12 needle with 0.10–0.18mm thread — KO, One-G or Nymo B/D — handles it comfortably. Antique holes are undocumented and vary lot to lot, and adjacent SVC sizes overlap far more than modern ones do, so test-thread a sample and reach for calipers rather than the card notation before anything count-critical. Strung counts on antique lots are estimates.

Where this material belongs. Period-correct transparent reds in this size are restoration workhorses — Plains beadwork repair, Victorian and Edwardian glass embroidery, anywhere a modern transparent red sits too clean and too uniform beside original work. Production era is Early 20th Century, and the glass behaves like it: slightly irregular, slightly generous with the light.
