A transparent red behaves more like a dye than a pigment, and that is the thing to settle before you order. Held singly these are a clear, warm brick red you can see straight through. Packed into a filled area the colour compounds where one bead overlaps the next, so the field reads considerably deeper — closer to oxblood — while the edges and the perforations keep flashing the brighter red back out. Buyers who matched from a few loose beads on a white bench are the ones who get caught out.
Transparency is a matching category, not a shade. An opaque red of the same hue stops light at the surface and sits flat and even; a silver lined red throws light back out of the channel. This glass does neither. Intensity depends on wall thickness and on how densely the beads sit, so a tight peyote panel and an airy loomed net built from the same tube will not read as the same colour. What is behind the work matters too — sewn to dark hide these deepen and cool, worked over a pale foundation they stay lively. If your reference piece used an opaque or a lined red, hue agreement alone will not make this the right substitute.
Lot character. Colour intensity varies across the stock as wall thickness varies, which is inherent to period transparents and shows far more plainly than it ever would in an opaque bead. Dark specks in the perforations are normal for this stock — kiln and annealing debris from period production rather than anything introduced since. Uncirculated warehouse stock of this age also carries the occasional off-colour bead, so order enough to sort from if you need a clean single-colour field.
Sizing and threading. SVC 10/0 runs 2.40–2.70mm with a hole in the 0.70–0.80mm range, roughly 13–15 beads to a strung inch, and strung counts for antique lots are estimates. A size 10–12 needle with 0.10–0.18mm thread — KO, One-G, Nymo B or D — suits it. Antique holes are undocumented and vary lot to lot, and adjacent SVC sizes overlap widely, so caliper measurement beats the card notation and a test-thread beats both.
This is the material for restoration work where a period transparent red is specified and a modern equivalent reads too uniform through the mass. We do not expect to source this colorway again. Browse our full SVC reds inventory to compare against your reference material.
Uncirculated old stock, never strung for trade. Small lot, finite old stock.

Antique Murano transparent red seed beads, 10/0, in a 10 gram tube. Light passes fully through the glass, so the colour compounds where beads overlap — single beads read a clear brick red while a filled field goes much deeper. Intensity varies with wall thickness, and period specks in the perforations are normal for this stock.
