Transparent Luster Red #1 — Antique SVC Venetian Seed Beads, 10/0

Two things are going on in this bead and they are easy to conflate. The luster is a thin pearlescent coating on the surface, and the glass underneath it is transparent, not opaque. On SVC article numbers the T suffix is exactly that flag. Set beside an opaque luster red of the same hue this reads deeper and more liquid, because light still travels through the body instead of stopping at the wall — the shimmer sits on top of a garnet-brick red rather than on top of a solid one.

What the coating does optically. The luster throws a cool violet-silver bloom across the shoulder of each bead, so a filled area shifts as you tilt it: warm red one moment, faintly iridescent the next. The perforations tell on it. Coating rarely reached down into the cut, so the hole walls read as clearer, warmer, more openly red than the outside of the bead — a fine speckled texture across the face of the work that is one of the reliable tells of period luster stock.

Lot character. Coating coverage varies bead to bead; some carry a full pearly veil, others show it thinly and read closer to a plain transparent red. Because it is a surface coating rather than a glass property, hard abrasion and aggressive cleaning can dull it, so keep finished pieces away from both. Uncirculated warehouse stock of this age carries the occasional off-colour bead — order enough to sort from if you need a clean single-colour field.

Sizing and threading. SVC 10/0 measures 2.40–2.70mm across with a perforation in the 0.70–0.80mm range, working out to roughly 13–15 beads to a strung inch. A size 10–12 needle with 0.10–0.18mm thread — KO, One-G or Nymo B/D — handles it comfortably. Antique holes are undocumented and vary lot to lot, and adjacent SVC sizes overlap far more than modern ones do, so test-thread a sample and reach for calipers rather than the card notation before anything count-critical. Strung counts on antique lots are estimates.

Where this material belongs. Luster reds are what restoration work on late Victorian purses, beaded fringe and ecclesiastical embroidery keeps asking for, and the modern equivalents get the hue without getting the two-tone perforation behaviour. Production era is Early 20th Century.
