The finish word is doing real work on this one. Translucent is neither opaque nor greasy, and it will not substitute for either. Light passes into these beads and comes out again without ever letting you see through them: a milky white that glows softly rather than sitting flat. Against an opaque chalk white they look softer and less dense. Against greasy white — which is a semi-translucent glass formula with its diffusion happening deep inside the bead — these read cleaner and more evenly milky, with the light behaving more like frosted window glass than like wax.

Why that matters for matching. Whites are where finish substitution shows up worst, because the eye has no hue to be distracted by and reads the surface behaviour instead. A field of these has a faint internal luminosity that lifts adjacent colours; the same field in opaque white would read heavier and more graphic. If your reference piece glows, this is the right category. If it stops the light dead, it is not.

Lot character. Dark specks in the perforations are normal for this stock — kiln and annealing debris from period production, and translucent glass shows them more readily than an opaque body would. Uncirculated warehouse stock of this age also carries the occasional off-colour bead, which is far more conspicuous in a white field than in a dark one, so order enough to sort from and plan a pre-sort for count-critical work.

Sizing and threading. SVC 10/0 measures 2.40–2.70mm across with a perforation in the 0.70–0.80mm range, working out to roughly 13–15 beads to a strung inch. A size 10–12 needle with 0.10–0.18mm thread — KO, One-G or Nymo B/D — handles it comfortably. Antique holes are undocumented and vary lot to lot, and adjacent SVC sizes overlap far more than modern ones do, so test-thread a sample and reach for calipers rather than the card notation before anything count-critical. Strung counts on antique lots are estimates.

Where this material belongs. Translucent whites are the background material of period beadwork — the ground that everything else is read against in Victorian purses, Plains restoration and antique bridal embroidery. Getting the ground wrong undoes accurate colour everywhere else in the piece. Production era is Early 20th Century.
