The surface is matte, and that is the decision you are making here — not the hue. A frosted bead scatters light at the surface instead of returning a highlight, so a filled area reads velvety and even, with no glint travelling across it as the piece moves. Set beside a glossy red of the same colour it looks softer and slightly lighter, almost chalky at a distance. Substituting across that boundary is the single most common way a technically correct hue match still reads wrong in the finished piece.
Translucent, and worth being precise about it. The glass passes light but you cannot see through it, which is not the same thing as greasy — there is no waxy internal diffusion here, and no transparency to compound in mass. What happens instead is that the matte skin holds the colour soft until light penetrates far enough to bring the internal red up from underneath, so the beads shift from a flat scarlet in shade to a warmer, deeper red in strong light. It is a bright, clean red rather than a brick or oxblood one.
Lot character. Frosting depth varies across uncirculated stock of this age; some beads are more thoroughly matte than others, and a few carry a slight sheen where the surface was less aggressively worked. Matte surfaces also register handling oils more readily than glossy ones, so work with clean hands on pale ground fabric. Dark specks in the perforations are normal for this stock — kiln and annealing debris from period production — and stock this old carries the occasional off-colour bead, so order enough to sort from.
Sizing and threading. SVC 11/0 runs 2.20–2.50mm with a hole in the 0.60–0.70mm range, roughly 15–16 beads to a strung inch. A size 10–12 needle with 0.10–0.18mm thread suits it — KO, One-G or Nymo B/D. Antique holes are undocumented and vary lot to lot, and 11/0 and 12/0 share much of the same size window in SVC stock, so caliper measurement beats the card notation and a test-thread beats both. Strung counts for antique lots are estimates.
Matte reds of this period are the ones restoration buyers struggle hardest to source, because the modern matte finishes sit differently on the glass and read cooler. We do not expect to source this colorway again. Browse our full SVC reds inventory to compare against your reference material.

Antique Murano frosted translucent red seed beads, 11/0, in a 10 gram tube. The matte surface scatters light rather than returning a highlight, so a filled area reads velvety and even where a glossy red of the same hue would glint. Translucent, not transparent, and frosting depth varies across the lot.
