The perforations in these are square, not round. That is a structural feature with real consequences at the bench: a square channel gives the bead flat internal faces, so it seats squarely against its neighbour instead of rolling, and rows in loom and peyote work sit down flatter and stack more predictably than round-holed stock of the same size. Beadwork built from square-holed antiques has a tighter, more architectural grid — one of the reasons collectors hunt this construction specifically.
Colour and finish. The body is transparent garnet-brick red under a thin pearlescent luster coating; the T in the article number marks the transparent base. Light travels through the glass while the coating throws a cool violet-silver sheen over the surface, so a filled area shifts between warm red and faint iridescence depending on the angle. The perforations read clearer and more openly red where the coating did not reach into the cut, which at this size becomes a fine speckle across the whole face of the work.
Lot character. Luster coverage varies bead to bead, from a full pearly veil to a thin cast that reads close to plain transparent red, and the squares themselves are not machine-perfect. Because the luster is a surface coating rather than a glass property, abrasion and aggressive cleaning will dull it. Uncirculated warehouse stock of this age carries the occasional off-colour bead, so order enough to sort from.
Sizing and threading. SVC 12/0 measures 1.80–2.10mm across with a perforation in the 0.50–0.60mm range, roughly 17–20 beads to a strung inch, and a size 10–12 needle with 0.10–0.18mm thread — KO, One-G or Nymo B/D — suits it. Test-threading matters more than usual here: antique holes are undocumented and vary lot to lot, a square channel does not present the same usable opening as a round one, and SVC 12/0 overlaps 11/0 on the high side and nearly coincides with 13/0 on the low side. Calipers beat the card notation, and strung counts on antique lots are estimates.
Where this material belongs. Square-holed luster reds turn up in loomed bands, period purse panels and geometric restoration work where the flatness of the grid is part of what you are copying. Production era is Early 20th Century.
