Peridot can be pronounced either "PAIR-ih-doh" or "PAIR-ih-dot", although the first pronunciation seems to be more prevalent, at least in our neck of the woods. Peridot is gem quality form of olivine, is sometimes referred to as olivine or Chrysolite. August's birthstone, peridot's perky lime to olive-green color makes this semiprecious gem perfect for bright summertime fashions. The depth and intensity of peridot's zesty green color is dependent upon the amount of iron within the stone. It is said that the Queen Cleopatra's extensive "emerald" collection was actually a large collection of high quality deep green Peridot.
