Antique SVC Venetian Opaque Luster 10/0 Seed Beads — Melon #1

Genuine Venetian 10/0 seed beads from old Società Veneziana Conterie warehouse stock, in Melon #1 — a bright coral red-orange in opaque glass, carrying a luster coating. The base color sits between tomato and coral: warm and clearly orange-leaning, but saturated enough to read as a true red-orange rather than a soft cantaloupe. It is a distinctly different animal from the transparent golden-amber oranges in this collection, and the two will not substitute for one another.

Because the base glass is opaque, none of the light-compounding behavior of transparent beads applies here — the color holds its value whether a single bead sits alone or a thousand mass together. What moves is the surface. The thin pearlescent luster coating over that opaque coral produces a soft, slightly milky sheen that shifts as the beadwork turns, giving a satin quality rather than the hard glassy shine of an uncoated opaque. Perforations may read a shade darker where the coating did not reach the interior of the cut, which is normal for a surface-applied finish. As with all coated antique beads, avoid prolonged abrasion and harsh chemicals to preserve the luster.

Color across the lot is consistent, with mild surface mottling on individual beads where the coating sat unevenly during firing. Small dark specks and patina appear in and around some perforations. Both are manufacturing and age characteristics consistent with cane-drawn Murano production and uncirculated old stock, not sorting defects.

Coral and melon tones served as warm, high-visibility accents in period Venetian beadwork, and the luster surface gave makers a way to add light interaction without the transparency that would let backing material show through.
